clothing lines in the back garden: possibly the most personal insight into your neighbour's life.

there was that jumper she wore when she met her husband back in '89 that's too sentimental to throw away. the towel she bought for ibiza last year that got no further than her house as she decided she was too old for such holidays. his favourite socks that are, to his dismay, getting thin at the toes. hung up next to them are those trousers with the knee patches. the tea towel with the coffee stain that just won't come out, but she's kept as it was her mother's. then there's those soft white baby grows that are drying, to be placed neatly in the drawer, ready for the new arrival in a month.

lives behind closed doors interest me, but the snippets of those lives we see on window ledges, thrown away in streets, sold at car boot sales, given to charity shops, and hung up on washing lines interest me even more.
